Weighted Vests: MYTH Busted

Some of the claims about weighted vests may be more myth than science.

You have most likely seen someone exercising with a weighted vest strapped around their chest. Weighted vests are one of the current exercise trends taking over social media. These vests have been said to improve everything from burning more calories to increasing cardiovascular health to building muscle. Many articles make broad and sweeping claims about the benefits of weighted vests, but do not have much scientific data to back up their claims. Many of these articles are found on reputable websites like Harvard Health, Atlantic Health, and orthopedic offices in good standing; unfortunately, the science isn't there yet.

The most questionable claim made by these articles is that wearing a weighted vest increases bone density. However, the few studies that have been done have not found this claim to be overwhelmingly true. The number of participants in these studies have been small, further limiting the ability to assert this claim. Although the impact of walking or running can lead to increased bone density, adding a weighted vest to the chest does not necessarily increase this impact or yield a higher bone density. If one of your goals is to build bone density, it would be better to include resistance training exercises a few times per week.

Right now, there is simply not enough evidence to support the claim that wearing a weighted vest improves bone density. Does this mean you shouldn’t use a weighted vest? Of course not! Although some claims may not be scientifically accurate or well-supported, there are certainly benefits to be gained in other areas. If wearing a weighted vest encourages you to get outside and stay active, go for it! Your cardiovascular system will thank you.
As always, talk to your doctor about what is best for you before trying a new exercise program.
