Physical and Mental Benefits of Getting Outside

How spending time outdoors can be beneficial for your physical health and mental health.

Spring is officially here!

And with spring comes warmer weather which gives us the opportunity to get outside more often. Even if it’s just a short walk around the block, getting some fresh air is never a bad idea. Whether you are walking, running, biking, hiking, playing tennis or pickle ball, all outdoor activities have many physical benefits. When we spend time in the sun, we absorb Vitamin D, which is responsible for absorbing nutrients that contribute to healthy and strong bones. Exercise also leads to a stronger heart and a lower risk of cardiovascular issues.  Physical activity also assists in weight management and reduction of the likelihood of developing a chronic illness.

Research has shown that exercise is not only beneficial for your physical health, but also for your mental health. Spending time in the sun can lead to increased serotonin and dopamine levels, which contribute to feelings of happiness. Time spent in the sun also reduces anxiety and depression, and can boost creativity and memory. In addition, it can lead to better sleep during the night and better attention during the day. All of these things work together to improve mental health; all you have to do is send some time outside! Even just 15 minutes a day outdoors can be beneficial for your mental health.

Whether you are an experienced athlete or a beginning a new sport or find that walking is the safest exercise for you, it cannot be denied that time spent outside is highly beneficial for physical and mental well being!
